Situated in the historic Stirling Terrace food precinct in Western Australia’s oldest city, Gourmandise & Co enjoys views across the waterfront and Princess Royal Harbour to Torndirrup.
Housed in one of the city’s oldest buildings - Glasgow House, this unique business has established a strong local following. Its reputation for quality food and its exclusive ambience has put it firmly on the tourist map as one of the ‘must-visit’ places in Albany. The food, the décor, and the furnishing transport you to the cafés of old provincial France. Was that an echo of Piaf floating on the breeze? The success of Gourmandise rests on its strong brand and has franchise potential - an option the owners would pursue, if only they were twenty years younger!
The building is substantial with private accommodation on the first floor providing up to four bedrooms, three of which have pleasant views. This, with two private car bays at the rear, adds the option to live above the business, at no additional cost, in the heart of town. The present owners lived there for a couple of years.
In the café, the central communal table was crafted from a single slab of a jarrah tree that fell long ago and is estimated to be 500 years old. This stunning example of nature’s art is a central feature and talking point. This and other tables provide adequate indoor seating, while the front veranda and open deck can accommodate many more. A green pyramid and an olive tree planter-box bookend the deck and provide herbs and trimmings that enhance the aromas wafting from the kitchen. With its wood-fired baking oven and other modern equipment, it is well set up to produce enough to satisfy the ever-present crowds.
The inside of the shop is creatively fitted out with extensive use of local timber and decorated with an eclectic display of French artefacts, collected by the current owners over the years. This collection and all operating equipment are owned and included with the business. The equipment is modern, in good condition, and fit for purpose.
The business has a good social media presence and ranks high on Trip Advisor, achieving number one position for four of the past six years (G&Co commenced trading 1 July 2014).
The owners will offer a reasonable handover period to ensure a smooth transition of all the systems, processes, supply sources, and methods that make Gourmandise the unique business that it is.
Albany is situated 418km south of Perth on the beautiful south coast of Western Australia. A high profile “destination It enjoys cooler summers than the capital and mild winters, making it a very liveable City. With a population over 37,000 and more than 10,000 in the neighbouring shires of Denmark and Mount Barker, it offers the essential services of a modern city, along with excellent schools, sporting facilities, and an expanding tertiary education sector, all set amid Nature’s huge playground. Unemployment is 2.7% below the state average, the median house price is $180,000 below Perth, and the population shows steady long-term growth around 2%.
The region provides much of the produce that finds its way into the Gourmandise kitchen. Recognised as a clean and green environment, local produce is of excellent quality and always fresh.
The ‘& Co’ portion of the Gourmandise & Co brand encompasses local artisans and producers who work behind the scenes. These strong relationships have been built by the current owners during the last decade in the Great Southern region of WA, and supplement in-store retail offerings as high demand regularly outstrips current in-house production capacity.
